Collection ID 302
Director: Oliver Stone
Starring: Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Jennifer Lopez, Powers Boothe, Claire Danes
Genre: Drama
Studio: Phoenix Pictures   Release date: 1997   Rated: R
Language (Country): English, Spanish, French, French (France)
Summary: A drifter (Penn) becomes entangled with a femme fatale (Lopez) and her husband (Nolte) after his car breaks down in their small Southwest town.
My Rating:
My Review: Starring Sean Penn (as Down on his luck - Bobby Cooper), Billy Bob Thornton (as the Demonic grease monkey - Darrell), Jennifer Lopez (as the smoking hot damaged goods - Grace McKenna), Powers Booth (as the small town sheriff - Sheriff Potter), Nick Nolte (as the small town tyrant - Jake McKenna), Jon Voight (as the blind indian who sees it all), Joaquin Phoenix (as the explosive - Toby N. Tucker), Claire Danes (as the jail bait tease - Jenny) and more. The cast and performances were outstanding. The characters stereotypes, but perfectly directed. Written (book and screenplay) by John Ridley and Directed by Oliver Stone, this movie is a outstanding piece of entertainment. Bobby is on the run from his latest mistake. His car breaks down in the middle of the desert. With nowhere left to turn he pulls into the town of Superior, Arizona. That's where he's tested. God has decided to test his resolve, his faith, his trust in mankind, love and his hope for a brighter future. The story is a dark gem, cut to perfection in the hands of Ridley (writer) and Stone (director). The town is infected with a particular kind of people. The desperate residents of Superior are symbols of pain, passion, love, redemption, opportunity and hate. Many of the Oliver Stone trademarks are present in the film. The camera work and editing; time lapse, flashbacks, cutaway shots, double exposures, lens flaring, wide angle lens work, the super-saturated dramatic characters, The movie is rich with atmosphere and graphic depictions of violence and sexuality. The violence is depicted in a very realistic manner, and I found parts of it disturbing. The ending while dark is perfectly executed. 4 out of 5.

Collection ID 406
Director: Jonathan Mostow
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel, Jon Bon Jovi, David Keith
Genre: Action
Studio: Universal Pictures   Release date: 2000   Rated: PG-13
Language (Country): English, French (France)
Summary: A German submarine is boarded by disguised American submariners trying to capture their Enigma cipher machine.
My Rating:
My Review: U-571 - 2000 (Action, war) Written and directed by Jonathon Mostow (Terminator-3, Breakdown) here's a tale of WWII with a very authentic feel. The movie was well cast - Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel, Jon Bon Jovi, Jake Weber - With some veteran and junior actors. The story is that of the Enigma Machine - During WWII, the Germans used an encryption algorithim; code named Enigma (by the Allies), to secure their communications. If the Allies could only get their hands on one of the machines, they could reverse engineer it, and change the course of the war. That's where our crew of submariners comes in. An old American sub is rigged to look like a German U-Boat, and the deception begins. This movie is shot almost exclusively on the set of a leaky old submarine. More than one actually, and the sets were entirely believable. Not only the sets, but the mock-ups, props, costumes and all the period shots. The movie was entirely convincing in that aspect. The special effects, technical aspects and cgi were all done exceptionally well. The scenes which depicted depth charges exploding near the submarine were awesome. The acting and direction was good, but there was some feel of anachronism. The characters acted more like a modern day group of individuals than a crew of a 1941. That's a minor complaint regarding this fantastic film. It's filled with some great suspense, action and drama. A tense, submarine adventure. I give this movie a 5 out of 5.

Director: Stuart Baird
Starring: Tommy Lee Jones, Wesley Snipes, Robert Downey Jr., Joe Pantoliano, Daniel Roebuck
Genre: Drama
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures   Release date: 1998   Rated: PG-13
Language (Country): German, English, Spanish (USA)
Summary: US Marshal Samuel Gerard (Jones) and his team of Marshals are assigned to track down Sheridan (Snipes), a murderer and robber.
My Rating:
My Review: Tommy Lee Jones reprises his role from 'The Fugitive' as U.S. Marshal Sam Gerard. His team of U.S. Marshals are joined by DSS Special Agent John Royce (Robert Downey Jr.) in a manhunt for escaped fugitive Mark Sheridan (Wesley Snipes). As a sequel to the Fugitive, it's a pretty good movie. The pacing is non-stop action, with Wesley Snipes proving his standing as an action hero. The plot? Snipes plays a fugitive accused of a crime that he didn't commit. The Marshals are tasked to bring him in. Robert Downey Jr. plays the secret bad guy who wants to off Snipes' character. The movie starts out with a bang as a plane full of convicts are on there way to prison. The plane goes down near a Louisiana swamp and the race is on. The movie is primarily a chase from that point on. As the movie progresses, Gerard realizes that Mark Sheridan isn't an ordinary fugitive on the run (in more way than one). While the plot is predictable and linear, the acting and direction keep it thrilling and exciting. Tommy Lee Jones overplayed his role, but Snipes did a good job portraying the hunted man on the run. Irene Jacob played the role of uber hot girlfriend to the fugitive. Lacking character development, the plot actually made the movie more interesting than I expected. As an action flick it hits the mark. I give it a 4 out of 5.

Collection ID 459
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Starring: Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Robin Wright Penn, Spencer Treat Clark, Charlayne Woodard
Genre: Thriller
Studio: Touchstone Pictures   Release date: 2000   Rated: PG-13
Language (Country): English, Spanish, French (USA)
Summary: A suspense thriller with supernatural overtones that revolves around a man who learns something extraordinary about himself after a devastating accident.
My Rating:
My Review: Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Split, Glass). Starring Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Robin Wright and others. I fell in love with M. Night Shyamalan's movies after seeing 'Sixth Sense'. Many of his other movies didn't fare as well commercially, but I liked them all the same. Here is another movie that hits all the spots. Bruce Willis plays his usual bitter, disgruntled character, but overall the casting was very well done. The story plays out (intentionally) like the comic book that it pays tribute to. Bruce Willis plays David Dunn, a married man working to support his wife and son. There's something unrevealed, unexplored and unexplained about his demeanor. A slightly injurious and mysterious past. It's something that affects his everyday life, but its completely out of focus, lurking in the back-ground. Something he can't or won't put to rest. His boring everyday life changes in a split second when he survives a devastating train wreck. He was on his way home from a job interview, the train derailed, and another train collided with the train that he was on… No one should have survived that tragic accident, but David walked away without a scratch. What just happened? Why did he survive? How could he have survived without sustaining any injuries at all? It's a suspense thriller with some supernatural overtones. Plenty of emotion, and plot twists. M. Night Shyamalan has done it again. The locations (set in Philadelphia) are great, the set work perfect, the costumes superb. The production is top notch. The casting was excellent and the musical score pulls us along on a train filled with twists and turns until the climactic ending. I give this movie a 5 out of 5.
