Director: Peter Weir
Starring: Jim Carrey, Laura Linney, Noah Emmerich, Natascha McElhone, Holland Taylor
Genre: Comedy
Studio: Paramount Pictures   Release date: 1998   Rated: PG
Language (Country): German, English, Czech, Hungarian, Polish (USA)
Summary: An insurance salesman/adjuster (Jim Carrey) discovers his entire life is actually a TV show.
My Rating:
My Review: In my opinion, this is one of Jim Carrey's best performances. In this movie, he plays 'Truman Burbank', a man who doesn't know that his entire life is a lie, a stage for people he doesn't know, may never meet, and will always love him. The 'Truman Show' is a 24/7 reality show featuring a 'non-actor'. A closed set of extras surrounds Truman as he is born, raised, and followed by the entire planet. It's an amazing spectacle of life, the ultimate extension of 'Reality TV'. The candid camera aspects are a bit scary, and the implications somewhat disturbing. Could we, as a society bring ourselves to treat someone as a captive slave for our entertainment? The social implications raised in this movie are quite interesting and disturbing at the same time. Jim Carry's performance was stellar. Not only does he manage to convey the rawest of emotions, his performance is both believable and entertaining. While we may associate his name with comedy, take the time to watch this movie and see for yourself. Here is emotion, conviction, and a genuine effort worthy of the title 'Actor' not 'Comedian'. What will happen when Truman discovers the truth about his life? Unfortunately, the supporting cast didn't provide the sort of performance that would have elevated this movie beyond the stigma of Carrey's comedy label. I give this movie a 4 out of 5.

Collection ID 630
Director: Veit Helmer
Starring: Denis Lavant, Chulpan Khamatova, Philippe Clay, Terrence Gillespie, E.J. Callahan
Genre: Art House & International
Studio: First Run Features   Release date: 2000   Rated: NR
Language (Country): None (Germany)
Summary: I was very sceptical at first, after reading all the reviews and seeing the screenshots. But the movie exceeded all the expectations and revealed a new dimension in the world of cinema. It is not a cilent movie, but only a few words are spoken, however the director and the actors managed to kept me mesmerized and captivated from the beginning till the very end. I only wish this movie were twice, no three times longer, and after it finished I kept reliving the episodes and the atmosphere for many hours and days. Chulpan Khamatova is utterly fascinating and her character is not only unforgettable, but also very personalized and lively. I will watch this movie again many times.
My Rating:
My Review: (German) A silent movie (sort of), an art film, a fairy tale, something that hollywood couldn't possibly produce. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Shot in black & white, partial color, and tinted at times in sepia and blue. The story revolves around a place, a family business , a swimming pool in a run down dilapidated building in a run down dilapidated country. There is no dialog in this movie. There is some speaking, a couple words here and there, in various different languages, but the story is told with actions, acting, and pictures. An enchanting tale, a love story, a drama, a comedy. The characters were very charming and the story takes you away.

Collection ID 664
Director: Yôji Yamada
Starring: Hiroyuki Sanada, Rie Miyazawa, Nenji Kobayashi, Ren Osugi, Mitsuru Fukikoshi
Genre: Action & Adventure
Studio: Empire Pictures   Release date: 2002   Rated: NR
Language (Country): Japanese (Japan)
Summary: Seibei Iguchi is a low-ranking samurai living in the fading days of the Shogun period in Japan. His wife has died of tuberculosis, and with two daughters and an elderly mother to support, he and his family must survive in austerity. But when news of his sword-fighting prowess gets out, his superiors order him on a dangerous mission: kill a renowned warrior who is on the wrong side of a clan power struggle.
My Rating:
My Review: An excellent movie in all regards. Wonderful masterpiece. The writing and acting were outstanding. The story of a mediocre Samurai is narated (after the event) by his Daughter. After the death of his wife, this humble man does his best to provide for his children and his elderly mother. Unfortunatley, circumstances (feudal tensions at the end of the Tokugawa era) won't let him rest, and he's called upon to perform the duties demanded by his position, clan, and honor. Superb production, direction and acting mark this remarkable film. The pacing and dialog are perfectly matched. The sets, costumes and locations perfect. The camera work was excelent and the music enchanting. The acting was truly exceptional. This is a excellent film.

Director: Joe Dante, John Landis
Starring: Dan Aykroyd, Albert Brooks, Vic Morrow, Doug McGrath, Charles Hallahan
Genre: Horror
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures   Release date: 1983   Rated: PG
Language (Country): English, French, German, Vietnamese (USA)
Summary: Famous directors create their own versions of classic stories from Rod Serling's landmark television series.
My Rating:
My Review: An anthology/homage to Rod Serling's TV show (same name) from '59-'64. Although the original show was filmed in b&w, this movie is presented in color. The movie starts with a prologue featuring Dan Akroyd and Albert Brooks. Following that are four episodes, presented in a manner consistent with the original show. The horror/sci-fi segments are directed by different directors. 1st segment: (Directed by John Landis) Vic Morrow (who died in a freak helicopter accident during the filming of the movie) is plays a disgruntled racist fed up with 'those people' who 'Took his job!'. 2nd segment: (Directed by Steven Spielberg) Scatman Crothers stars as a mystical magician who transforms the residents of a local retirement home. 3rd segment: (Directed by Joe Dante) Kathleen Quinlan is the unwilling house guest of a boy who's thoughts are transformed into reality. The 4th segment (Directed by George Miller) is the best. John Lithgow goes over the edge when he spots a 'Little Green Man' trying to bring down the airplane he's on. Very reminiscent of the original series - Odd, eery, creepy situations that spin out of control. The direction and acting was good - Especially John Lithgow's performance in the last episode. One of the best parts of this movie was the original score by Jerry Goldsmith. Overall I give this movie a 4 out of 5.
