Language (Country): English, German (USA)
Summary: Incompetent cop Frank Drebbin has to foil an attempt to assasinate Queen Elizabeth II.
My Rating:
My Review: The full title of this movie: The Naked Gun - From the files of Police Squad! It contains a large number of gags from the short lived television series "Police Squad". Starring Leslie Nielsen, Priscilla Presley, Ricardo Montalban, George Kennedy, O.J. Simpson, 'Weird Al' Yankovic, Susan Beaubian, John Houseman, Reggie Jackson! and many others. Leslie Nielsen stars as Frank Drebin, and incompetent but hard working police detective on the trail of his partner's (O.J. Simpson) killer. while investigating that slaying, he stumbles upon a plot to kill the Queen of England. Now it's up to him to thwart the plan and save the day. Produced by the people who brought us Airplane! here's another slapstick comedy filled with tons of visual gags and stupid humor that actually spawned two sequels. I have to admit that it was funny. Especially the opening scene where O.J. buys it. Lesley Nielsen is awesome. Straight faced and sincere, he delivers his ridiculous dialog without blinking in this ridiculous police comedy. I give it a 3 out of 5.

Director: David Cronenberg
Starring: Peter Weller, Judy Davis, Ian Holm, Julian Sands, Roy Scheider
Genre: Drama
Studio: Recorded Picture Company (RPC)   Release date: 1991   Rated: R
Language (Country): English (Canada)
Summary: Not an adaptation of beat writer William S. Burrough's novel but a mix of biography and an interpretation of his drug- induced writing processes combined with elements of his work in this paranoid fantasy about Bill Lee, a writer who accidentally shoots his wife, whose typewriter transforms into a cockroach and who becomes involved in a mysterious plot in North African port called Interzone. Wonderfully bizarre, not unlike Burrough's books.

Collection ID 1508
Director: Jean-Jacques Annaud
Starring: Sean Connery, F. Murray Abraham, Christian Slater, Elya Baskin, Michael Lonsdale
Genre: Drama
Studio: Neue Constantin Film   Release date: 1986   Rated: R
Language (Country): German (France)
Summary: An intellectually nonconformist monk investigates a series of mysterious deaths in an isolated abbey.
My Rating:
My Review: Based on a novel (by Umberto Eco), this movie was directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. Starring a fantastic cast - Sean Connery (playing William of Baskerville), Christian Slater (as William's apprentice), F. Murray Abraham (playing Bernardo Gui), Ron Perlman (playing Salvatore) and many others. The acting by all (especially Ron Perlman/not especially Christian Slater) was outstanding. In this perfectly paced and directed period piece (set in the early 14th century), William of Baskerville answers a summons to unravel a shocking series of murders. While the other monks are paralyzed by religious stricture and ignorance, William unravels the clues quite easily. When William's nemesis, Bernardo Gui arrives, things take a turn for the worst. The inquisition doesn't care about facts, and William's quest for the truth could cost him his life. Truly outstanding movie with great production, set work, costumes, props and dialog and a twisted mystery worthy of this medieval Sherlock Holmes. Worth watching again and again. I just wish I had a better copy. 5 of 5.

Director: Jared Hess
Starring: Jon Heder, Jon Gries, Aaron Ruell, Efren Ramirez, Diedrich Bader
Genre: Comedy
Studio: Twentieth Century Fox Home Video   Release date: 2004   Rated: PG
Language (Country): English, Spanish (USA)
Summary: The delightfully original film "Napoleon Dynamite" follows the life of a geeky teenager of the same name, and through his misadventures at his high school and at home in Preston, Idaho. This film first began to delight audiences at the Sundance Film Festival, and now that it has been nationally released across the country, I finally got the chance to see why. It is a movie that doesn't seem to bother with an intricate storyline, but is simply tales from Napoleon's everyday life, small events to an outsider but from his perspective, his whole world. This, in a sense, makes the picture a more realistic depiction of teenage life. The character of Napoleon, brought to life by Jon Heder, is a caricature of a high school teenager. With a tuft of brownish hair, glasses, and a permanent look of confusion, getting pushed against lockers by popular jocks are regular occurrences for Napoleon, and strange behaviors as talking about hunting werewolves or saving tatertots in his pants pockets for later seem normal to him. He is delightfully quirky, and it makes the audience root for him as the unlikely hero. From his adventures at school with his friends Deb (Tina Majorino) and Pedro (Efren Ramirez), to his life at home with his geeky 31-year-old brother Kip (Aaron Ruell), his football crazed Uncle Rico (Jon Gries), and his llama Tina, Napoleon brings a unique charm to the screen that is only enhanced by the crazy characters around him. "Napoleon Dynamite" is certainly one of the most original and strangely hilarious films of the year, and thanks to the brilliant script co-written by Jared and Jerusha Hess, the direction by Jared Hess, and the performances by all members of the cast, it is sure to win over any audience member, as quickly as it won me over.

My Review: Another movie where I jumped the gun. After seeing previews, and having friends recommend the movie, this selection jumped from must see (on my Netflix queue) to must buy. I bought a copy the other day, and I'm glad I did. Geeks rule! This movie chronicles one geeks journey through a week of high school hell. It brought back a lot of memories for me, the characters were full of flavor. Quirky and real, tragic and truthful. Yeah it was funny, but is was also satirical and dramatic. The pacing and directing were fantastic. The music and characters transported me back to 1982 (just like one of the characters in the movie). I graduated in 1982, and this movie was my time machine.
