Genre: Action
Studio: Gaumont   Release date: 1997   Rated: PG-13

Summary: In the colorful future, a cab driver unwittingly becomes the central figure in the search for a legendary cosmic weapon to keep Evil and Mr Zorg at bay.
My Rating:
My Review: Written (in part) and directed by Luc Besson (The Big Blur, La Femme Nikita, the Professional). This movie stars Bruce Willis as Korben Dallas, Gary Oldman as Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg, Ian Holm as Father Vito Cornelius, Milla Jovovich as Leeloo, Chris Tucker as Ruby Rhod and many others. The cast was outstanding. The acting was terrific. Bruce Willis continues to play John McLane, and Milla Jovovich was perfect as LeeLoo. Luc Besson creates a slightly more frenetic version of the Blade Runner world. The comedic touches lifts us up into a somewhat more colorful future. Bruce Willis is a down on his luck cabbie in 23rd century New York. He's also entrusted with the protection of the universe's last hope. Milla Jovovich stars as the incarnation of an alien species sent to earth to retrieve the mythic elements which will protect this universe from destruction at the hands of an ultimate evil. Willis and Jovovich are paired up against Gary Oldman as Zorg the crazed arms dealer and the opportunistic Mangalores. Sexy, smart, snappy and visually stunning, this movie combines all the right elements to create an entertaining masterpiece.

My Review: No I haven't read the book, and this was Kim's pick, not mine. Just because I didn't read the book doesn't mean I'm prejudiced against the movie, but I will say that my natural instincts told me that this movie was written for a specific type of audience, and I might not be that target. The screenplay (based on the novel (same name) by E.L. James) was written by Kelly Marcel. Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (her first feature length film). Starring Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan, Jennifer Ehle and many other hot bodies. The movie starts out by introducing the characters. One of them is a super-wealthy elitist who's just out for a good time (Jamie Dornan playing Christian Grey). The other (Dakota Johnson playing Anastasia Steele) is an innocent young woman eager to work in her chosen field (literature), but struggling to make ends meet by working in a book store. If you've seen the previews (rather short), you probably know everything you need to know about the movie. It's designed entirely around hot young models (or actors if you prefer), great costumes, perfectly choreographed musical montages and the insinuation of kinky sex. That's it. I'm not saying it wasn't well executed. The production was great, the hot bodies were smoking, and the sidelong glances and breath-holding scenes were exquisite. It's a romance designed to make the women melt - so if you want your woman to melt in your hands; if you'd like to indulge in the fantasy for a few hours, then by all means - rent this movie and turn down the lights. Personally, I found the dialog a bit preposterous, pretentious and contrived. I didn't have much confidence in the sincerity of the characters. The chemistry really wasn't there, and it seemed as if the producers spent more time on the set, the scenery, and the costumes than they did on proper dialog and writing. It's definitely a well produced piece of Hollywood cinema, and it works to get your blood pressure up a bit, but it's not much beyond the surface assumptions. Watch it without high hopes or unrealistic expectations. I give it a 3 out of 5 for delivering on my expectations. PS The ending was stupid.

Director: Julien Temple
Starring: Paul Cook, Stewart Copeland, Stephen Fisher, Bill Grundy, Billy Idol
Genre: Documentary
Studio: FilmFour   Release date: 2000   Rated: R
Language (Country): English (UK)
Summary: A film about the career of the notorious punk rock band, the Sex Pistols.
My Rating:
My Review: The Filth & The Fury: A Sex Pistols Film - 2000 (Documentary, biography, music) Directed by Julian Temple. This documentary (not a rockumentary) delivered a socially indexed examination of the Sex Pistols. The band members (Johnny Rotten (aka John Lydon), Steve Jones, Glen Matlock, Paul Cook, Sid Vicious), their manager (Malcolm McLaren), the groupies, family members and the fans. These revolutionary rockers were born in the crucible of post-industrial England. The band was formed in London during an economic depression and the socio-political climate helped to define the band, the members, their message and the tragic tale that is the Sex Pistols. Officially, they only recorded one album (Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols), but their influence on other bands, the music industry and an entire genre is legendary. Here was an out of control group of adrenaline and hormone fueled young men who hated the climate of political and economic repression that brought so many British citizens to the very brink of destruction. They reacted by doing something - They wrote lyrics, poems, anthems. They expressed themselves and the angst of their fans. They put words to music, and motion to a movement of social upheaval. While some might say they made things worse, in a very real sense they provided a pressure release valve for young Britains who were teetering on the edge of destruction - Self destruction, societal destruction and the economic collapse of their nation. The footage of the Sex Pistols performing on stage makes one want to dive off a stage head first into the swirling crowd of chaotic, clashing limbs that are the masses. Hated, banned, alienated, chaotic, aggressive and opinionated - The Sex Pistols were expressing the angst of their generation, and the audiences couldn’t get enough. This documentary does a damn good job of covering all aspects of the band. Focusing on the band members, the social climate, interviews with various personalities and the band’s television interviews, we get a terrific view of all that was ‘The Sex Pistols’. I give it a 4 out of 5.

Director: Don Taylor
Starring: Kirk Douglas, Martin Sheen, Katharine Ross, James Farentino, Ron O'Neal
Genre: Drama
Studio: The Bryna Company   Release date: 1980   Rated: PG
Language (Country): English (USA)
Summary: A modern aircraft carrier is thrown back in time to 1941 near Hawaii, just hours before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour.
My Rating:
My Review: A classic military drama. An excellent time travel story. A modern (for the early 80s) American nuclear powered aircraft carrier is time-warped back to 1941, just in time to prevent the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Plenty of moral dilemmas, lots of drama, the acting was pretty good, and the story excellent. Unfortunately, the special effects weren't all that good, and the editing wasn't so good. The movie stars Kirk Douglas, Katharine Ross, and Martin Sheen. The best part of the movie is the setting and shots of military hardware. Parts of the movie are shot in or around the various Naval Air Stations, and onboard the USS Nimitz. The ending may put off some of todays audiences, but I thought it was well handled. I give this movie a 3 out of 5. Remake candidate?
