Director: Ivan Reitman
Starring: Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Warren Oates, P.J. Soles, Sean Young
Genre: Comedy
Studio: Sony Pictures   Release date: 1981   Rated: R
Language (Country): English, Spanish, French (USA)
Summary: Bill Murray was heading toward a career peak on the back of comedies such as this one from 1981, the second film in his ongoing collaboration with director Ivan Reitman (the two went on to make "Ghostbusters"). Murray plays a chronic loser who joins the army and fails to find a fan for his ironic sensibilities in his by-the-book sergeant (Warren Oates). When push comes to shove, however, the smirking hero takes charge of his ragtag unit and turns them into fighting machines, albeit to the rhythm of hit songs by Manfred Mann and Sly Stone. The film is occasionally funny, but it mostly plays like any one of a dozen underachieving comedies featuring players from "Saturday Night Live" and "SCTV". "--Tom Keogh"
My Rating:
My Review: A hilarious military parody. Directed by comedy king (Animal House, Ghostbusters, Stripes) Ivan Reitman. This military spoof puts Bill Murray and Harold Ramis in Army green. After loosing his, job, apartment, car and girlfriend, Murray decides there's nowhere left to turn but the Army. After convincing his best friend to enlist with him, the two of them are off to basic training where they engage in much hi-jinks before a slapstick graduation. Once again we see Bill Murray in his distinctive relaxed comic method. Here's another comic masterpiece for anyone's collection.

Director: Lewis Allen
Starring: Frank Sinatra, Sterling Hayden, James Gleason, Nancy Gates, Kim Charney
Genre: Crime
Studio: Image Entertainment   Release date: 1954   Rated: Unrated
Language (Country): English (USA)
Summary: It's known that the President will be passing through a certain small town... and it's known that someone will attempt to kill him there.
My Rating:
My Review: 1954 - Black & White. Frank Sinatra as a Villain! It's a secret. The president is going to arrive in a little whistle stop called 'Suddenly'. It may be a secret to everyone in town. Everyone but a group of out of town gangsters that is. This group of thugs is led by John Baron (Played by Frank Sinatra). Baron and his gang show up unexpectedly with a sinister plan. Long range assassination using a rifle. This movie, pre-dated president John F. Kennedy's assassination by several years, and some would say it foreshadowed his death. The acting, asside from that of Frank Sinatra, was absolutely horrible, the directing was lacking, the music very poorly scored. The story was suspensefull and taught and the writting was pretty good. One can't help but appreciate the way this movie paints the post war era of McCarthyism in America. This one gets a 4 out of 7, primarily on the strength of Sinatra's acting.

Collection ID 40
Director: Sidney J. Furie
Starring: Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman, Jackie Cooper, Marc McClure, Jon Cryer
Genre: Adventure
Studio:   Release date: 1987   Rated:
Language (Country): English, French (UK)
Summary: The Man of Steel crusades for nuclear disarmament and meets Lex Luthor's latest creation, Nuclear Man.
My Rating:
My Review: Starring Christopher Reeve as Superman, and Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor. In this last of the franchise, Superman battles Nuclear powers. In a crusade to rid the world of nuclear weapons, the Man of Steel does battle with Lex Luthor's latest creation - Nuclear Man. This low budget movie is rife with little subplots, but the central theme of nuclear disarmament is quite prevalent. Supernans arch nemesis creates a solar powered adversary to test Superman's mettle. The special effects are wires and green screen. The acting (aside from Gene Hackman) is truly abysmal, the dialogue terrible, the editing crap (there's obviously a lot of missing footage in this 90 minute theatrical release) and the direction horrid. I give this stinker a 1 out of 5.

Collection ID 125
Director: Peter Yates
Starring: Cher, Dennis Quaid, Liam Neeson, John Mahoney, Joe Mantegna
Genre: Crime
Studio: TriStar Pictures   Release date: 1987   Rated: R
Language (Country): English, French, Spanish, Portuguese (USA)
Summary: A judge commits suicide, and his secretary is found murdered. A homeless deaf-mute man, Carl Anderson is arrested for her murder. Public defender Kathleen is assigned by the court as his lawyer. She sets to find the real killer, and gets help from the congressional advisor, Eddie Sanger who is called to be on the jury panel. Together they discover a dangerous circle of corruption in high places.
My Rating:
My Review: Cher is a talented artist (with one name). Not only does she have a great voice and talent at writing songs, she can also act (Silkwood, Mask, The Witches of Eastwick, Moonstruck, Faithful, Burlesque and more), and here's one more example. This movie starred Cher, Dennis Quaid, Liam Neeson, John Mahoney, Joe Mantegna and others. The casting wasn't the best, but good direction helped make up for the weaker performances. The story: After a supreme court judge commits suicide, his secretary is murdered, and a homeless man is accused of the crime. This reluctant witness (Liam Neeson) is assigned a court appointed lawyer (Cher). She does her best to help this deaf and mute client, but the case becomes more complicated when she discovers a conspiracy of corruption and murder that leads to a very unexpected place. I remember when I first saw this movie. I really was taken by surprise when I found out who actually 'did it'. The juror who assists in the investigation was another welcome change of pace. A courtroom drama and thriller with some interesting twists. I give it a 4 out of 5.

Director: E. Elias Merhige
Starring: Aaron Eckhart, Ben Kingsley, Carrie-Anne Moss, Harry J. Lennix, Kevin Chamberlin
Genre: Drama
Studio: Paramount Home Video   Release date: 2004   Rated: R
Language (Country): English (USA)
Summary: In SUSPECT ZERO, FBI Agent Tom Mackelway finds himself caught in a cat-and-mouse game with a brutal serial killer, and all clues point to a renegade agent "gone native." Trained by the government to use his psychic abilities to track and capture other serial killers, the renegade is killing other serial killers and claims to be in pursuit of the ultimate serial killer, a man he calls Suspect Zero. As Mackelway becomes increasingly obsessed with his suspect, he must decide what happens when pursuer and prey come face to face – and if rational justice or primal revenge will prevail.
My Rating:
My Review: An excellent crime drama. A serial killer is on the loose, abducting hundreds of children, someone who murders completely at random. Who is this 'Suspect Zero'? An original murder mystery? I don't think I've seen this plot before. Ben Kingsley provides a stellar performance, while the others pale in comparison. The story is great, the props were fantastic. The art direction was superb. It could have had a little more character development. Trying to figure out what was going on was something of a challenge, but the ending wasn't much of a surprise. Very well executed. The plot was very tightly woven, and this movie could lead to a television series. I give it a 4 out of 5.
