Summary: Classified "top secret" by the Navy and banished by the Department of Defense, RED CELL is the true account of a unit ~the government denies ever existed! This is the story the government does not want you to know about, but every American should hear. RED CELL contains rare and exclusive footage shot during the exercises conducted by Red Cell. It contains evidence of incredible lapses in military security, as well as never before seen footage of Red • Cell in action. This film will let you decide for yourself whether the Navy was justified in disbanding Red Cell, or if it was just a "band aid" approach designed to stifle criticism of base security operations.

Director: Antony Hoffman
Starring: Val Kilmer, Carrie-Anne Moss, Benjamin Bratt, Tom Sizemore, Simon Baker
Genre: Sci-Fi
Studio: Warner Bros.   Release date: 2000   Rated: PG-13
Language (Country): English, French (Canadian Dub) (USA)
Summary: Astronauts search for solutions to save a dying Earth by searching on Mars, only to have the mission go terribly awry.
My Rating:
My Review: Screenplay by Chuck Pfarrer and Jonathan Lemkin. Directed by Anthony Hoffman (This is his only feature length film). Starring Val Kilmer, Carrie-Anne Moss, Tom Sizemore and others. Visually, this is an excellent movie. Unfortunately, the dialog and 'science' are pretty useless. The premise is unoriginal - In the near future, the Earth is Dying - It's overpopulated, over-polluted, and almost bereft of resources; so we need a new place to live - The obvious answer is: Let's 'Terraform Mars'. Now that we've been changing the atmosphere and seeding the planet with algae for decades, it's time to send some astronauts to explore the planet. The premise is the start of all poorly written scripts… If they're not done terraforming, why would they send astronauts? Why not send satellites? Why didn't they send astronauts a long time ago? What's the point of sending the astronauts? What exactly is their mission? And why, why, do they have a navigation robot with them that's capable of murdering the astronauts? Couldn't they manage with a robot that you can outrun or turn off if you might need to? It's a navigation robot? Wouldn't a navigation calculator suffice? There are many predictable plot points, many scientific snafus, ridiculous plot holes, and poorly considered dialog. As I said earlier, the visuals and digital effects were very well done. The sound was excellent, as was the score. The costumes and lighting were also well done. The acting was adequate, but the poorly constructed plot and numerous physics faux-pas continue to bring this movie down. I give the movie a 3 out of 5 this time around, and any repeat viewings might result in a lower score.

Collection ID 404
Director: John Frankenheimer
Starring: Ben Affleck, Gary Sinise, Charlize Theron, Dennis Farina, James Frain
Genre: Crime
Studio: Dimension Films   Release date: 2000   Rated: R
Language (Country): English (USA)
Summary: After assuming his dead cellmate's identity to get with his girlfriend, an ex-con finds himself the reluctant participant in a casino heist.
My Rating:
My Review: Reindeer Games - 2000 (Action, crime, drama) Marred only by excessive exposition, this action packed, holiday themed movie is a complex twisted tale of a love, deception and criminal activity. Directed by one of my favorite directors (John Frankenheimer), and starring a great cast (Ben Affleck, Gary Sinise, Charlize Theron, Dennis Farina, James Frain, Donal Logue, Danny Trejo, Isaac Hayes), this is a convoluted heist movie. Rudy (Affleck) gets out of the pen, but his buddy Nick (Frain) does not. Rudy tells a little lie, and hooks up with Nick's gorgeous pen-pal (Theron), Ashley. Moments after their 'happy time', the heist plot kicks in. Ashley's brother wants Rudy's help ripping off the 'Tomahawk' casino. The problem? Rudy's pretending to be Nick, so he didn't actually work at the casino (Nick did), and that's just the tip of the iceberg in this winter wonderland. Everyone's got a secret, everyone's looking to score, and no one's knows where the 'Pow-Wow' safe is. Filmed on location (parts of it) in British Colombia, the scenes with real snow added an air of authenticity to this twisted heist flick. Affleck's acting was some of his best ever. Sinise was particularly sinister as the twisted brother, lover, trucker, mean-ass mother effer! The rest of the cast gave outstanding performances, and they were all well matched in acting talent. Seeing Charlize Theron topless was a happy bonus, which added plenty of cheer to my holiday spirit. This one packs in thrills, suspense, and plenty of action. The twist at the end was great, and no I didn't see it coming (the first time around). I give this movie a 4 out of 5.

Collection ID 54
Director: Jerry London
Starring: Burt Reynolds, Liza Minnelli, James Remar, Richard Masur, Dionne Warwick
Genre: Action
Studio: Kings Road Entertainment   Release date: 1988   Rated: R
Language (Country): English (USA)
Summary: When call-girl Della gets caught in the middle of a drug bust at a hotel where she was meeting a trick, she is held hostage by a robber that busted in on the drug agents and the drug dealers. She gets rescued by vice cop Church who is accused of staging the aborted bust. Ex-ballplayer turned drug dealer Roger is in tight with corrupt vice cops and their superiors And the fireworks start popping.
My Rating:
My Review: Starring Burt Reynolds (as Chicago police detective Tony Church) and Liza Minnelli (as the call girl), this movie is a by the numbers romantic comedy with a stale script. Tony is suspended by the department after he survives a drug raid massacre. The only witness to the crime is a crazy call girl; Della. When Della finds herself stalked by the killer, she hires Church to be her bodyguard. Church is convinced he can clear his name if he catches the crooks so he agrees to sign on as Della's 'Rent-A-Cop'. The acting is b-grade, and the writing highly predictable. The chemistry between Reynolds and Minnelli isn't all that good, and the plot holes large enough to drive a bus through. I give it a 2 out of 5.
