Director: Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones
Starring: Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones
Genre: Adventure
Studio: Michael White Productions   Release date: 1975   Rated: PG
Language (Country): English (UK)
Summary: King Arthur and his knights embark on a low-budget search for the Grail, encountering many very silly obstacles.
My Rating:
My Review: An absolute riot. A cult flick unlike any other. I have many friends who quote lines from this movie, and I've been known to do so as well. It's a very funny movie. One of my favorites. The somewhat frenetic pacing of this movie actually contributes to the comedic flavor. Everyone is rushing about trying to pack in one more joke. It's low budget, and the directors (Terry Gilliam & Terry Jones) take advantage of that to great effect (no horses, but we do have coconut shells). The useless prattle of wise-cracking villagers is most amusing. Of course there's a story - and it's one of my favorites; the story of King Arthur and his quest to find the holy grail. Traveling the 10th century country-side of England, the King and his band of misfit knights do battle with the French, a menacing wizard named 'Tim', killer rabbits and the maidens of castle Anthrax. The adventure is classic. Filled with fodder for anyone who enjoys a good story, and comic lines that will leave you reeling with barely concealed guffaws and outright bursts of bellowing laughter. I want to travel the countryside with King Arthur, fighting off the scourge of the workers in the anarcho-syndicalist commune. The ending was classic Python.

Collection ID 635
Director: Ian MacNaughton, Terry Hughes
Starring: Neil Innes, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, John Cleese, Carol Cleveland
Genre: Comedy
Studio: Paramount   Release date: 1982   Rated: R
Language (Country): English (UK, USA)
Summary: "Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl" (1982) serves up a great, steaming pile of the famed British comedy troupe's finest, funniest, and foulest work. Culled from their four-night stand at the Hollywood Bowl in 1980, this selection of sketches and songs includes some of the most storied material from the BBC series, "Monty Python's Flying Circus". Numbers include the sexually confused lumberjack, the Ministry of Silly Walks, the Argument Clinic, and the exploding balladeer. Some of the group's funnier short-film pieces are featured as well, including the International Philosophy Match (Germany vs. Greece) and Terry Gilliam's animated pieces. This program is a fine introduction for viewers unaccustomed to Monty Python's peculiar brand of humor, and it will become clear where The Kids in the Hall got their shtick. Monty Python aficionados will enjoy seeing the lads do their thing for a live crowd, and there's a nice (though "nice" hardly seems the word) rapport with the audience. The sketches are looser and less hermetic than those in the "Monty Python" show or movies, such as 1974's "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" or 1983's "Monty Python's the Meaning of Life". Aside from the unusual setting, there's nothing particularly revelatory about "Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl." But for Python fans and fanatics--and they are legion--this won't matter a jot. "-- Nick Poppy"
My Rating:
My Review: Irreverent as always. British humor at it's best. Monty Python's Flying Circus crew live. Hilarious skits, ridiculous characters, and absurd musical dance numbers. This one gets a 3 out of 5.

Director: Duncan Jones
Starring: Sam Rockwell, Kevin Spacey, Dominique McElligott, Rosie Shaw, Adrienne Shaw
Genre: Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi
Studio: Liberty Films UK   Release date: 2009   Rated: R
Language (Country): English, Spanish (UK)
Summary: Sam Bell has a three year contract to work for Lunar Industries. For the contract's entire duration, he is the sole employee based at their lunar station. His primary job responsibility is to harvest and periodically rocket back to Earth supplies of helium-3, the current clean and abundant fuel used on Earth. There is no direct communication link available between the lunar station and Earth, so his only direct real-time interaction is with GERTY, the intelligent computer whose function is to attend to his day to day needs. With such little human contact and all of it indirect, he feels that three years is far too long to be so isolated; he knows he is beginning to hallucinate as the end of his three years approaches. All he wants is to return to Earth to be with his wife Tess and their infant daughter Eve, who was born just prior to his leaving for this job. With two weeks to go, he gets into an accident at one of the mechanical harvesters and is rendered unconscious. Injured, he ...
My Rating:
My Review: Instant sci-fi classic. Sam Rockwell plays Sam Bell, a Lunar miner. Sam's stationed on the far-side of the moon, mining Helium-3 to help fuel Earth's energy needs. Sam and his robotic companion, GERTY, manage the mining operation on this rather lonely outpost. Isolated and cut off from standard radio contact, Sam does his best to keep himself and the mining operation running. His three year contract is approaching it's end, and he's looking forward to a reunion with his wife and child. With just three weeks left to go, Sam begins to see and hear strange things. When he decides to do a little investigating, he unveils secrets better left hidden. An excellent mystery, fine thriller, and socially cutting drama. Excellent camera work with perfect sets and props. The special effects are truly outstanding. With models, miniatures, and superb camera work, the immersive environment created in this movie trumps anything done with chi. 5 out of 5.
