Director: Fritz Lang
Starring: Brigitte Helm, Alfred Abel, Gustav Fröhlich, Rudolf Klein-Rogge, Fritz Rasp
Genre: Action & Adventure
Studio: Paramount Pictures   Release date: 1927   Rated: Not Rated
Language (Country): English (Germany)
Summary: Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" belongs to legend as much as to cinema. It's a milestone of sci-fi and German expressionism. Yet the story makes minimal sense, and the "theme" belongs in a fortune cookie; to experience the film's pagan power, you have to "see the movie". But for decades we couldn't, not really--not with so many versions, all incomplete, often in public-domain prints like smudged photocopies. This Murnau Foundation restoration changes all that. Some shots, scenes, and subplots may be lost forever, but intertitles indicate how they fit into the original continuity and the characters' individual trajectories. Most crucially, the images are crisp, vibrant, and three-dimensional instead of murky and flattened. The composite sequences (the Tower of Babel, a sea of lusting eyes) have been restored to their hallucinatory ferocity. And there's one moment when you can see a bead of sweat roll down a man's cheek--in medium long-shot. "--Richard T. Jameson"
My Rating:
My Review: It's an old black & white silent movie, but it's magnificent. A sci-fi throwback from 1927. This movie illustrates a dystopian future where a strict social caste forms the basis of revolution and romance. The directing, music and scope are fantastic. The only drawback is the over-dramatic acting.

Genre: Action & Adventure
Studio: Lionsgate   Release date: 1988   Rated: R
Language (Country): English (USA)
Summary: In a storm of Desire, deception and murder... four people are about to be swept away...Academy Award-winner Faye Dunaway, Daniel J. Travanti, John Laughlin (Crime of Passion), Kim Cattrall (Mannequin) and Ned Beatty (The Fourth Protocol) star in a twisted suspense thriller of murder, lust and greed.
My Rating:
My Review: Intrigue, drama, deception. What starts out as a tropical vacation cruise on a chartered yacht, turns into murderous greed and a pretty good drama. In search of a buried treasure, just off the coast of Cuba, these two timing characters are prepared to stab each other in the back for two millions dollars worth of Rio Verde'. Starring Faye Dunaway, Daniel J. Travanti, John Laughlin, Kim Cattrall and Ned Beatty, this movie is filled with intrigue, action and double-crossing characters. Great suspense, and plenty of twists and turns grab your attention in this sexy carribbean cruise. The acting wasn't the best, but the cast was well matched. The music/soundtrack was lacking, but the location and action shots were excellent. The direction wasn't very good, the dialogue was horrible, and there's a totally preposterous twist near the end of the movie. This movie could come off much better if it were remade.

Director: John Huston
Starring: Gregory Peck, Richard Basehart, Leo Genn, James Robertson Justice, Harry Andrews
Genre: Adventure, Drama
Studio: Moulin Productions Inc.   Release date: 1956   Rated: Not Rated
Language (Country): English (UK, USA)
Summary: This classic story by Herman Melville revolves around Captain Ahab and his obsession with a huge whale, Moby Dick. The whale caused the loss of Ahab's leg years before, leaving Ahab to stomp the boards of his ship on a peg leg. Ahab is so crazed by his desire to kill the whale, that he is prepared to sacrifice everything, including his life, the lives of his crew members, and even his ship to find and destroy his nemesis, Moby Dick.
My Rating:
My Review: The 1956 version, directed by John Huston. Screenplay by Ray Badbury, based on the novel by Herman Melville. Starring Gregory Peck in the lead role. Here is the elemental tale of obsession, adventure and tragedy. Captain Ahab is captain of the 'Pequod' a ghost ship that doesn't know it yet. Years ago a great white whale took a piece of the Captain's soul, and Ahab has been stalking the decks with his peg leg ever since. Ahab seeks the destruction of this whale, no matter the cost. He stalks it, he hunts it, he would follow it to the ends of the earth. God help the ship and crew that Ahab drags with him in his maniacal quest. Gregory Peck was awesome. Inseparable from the character. The acting and direction were excellent. The sets, cinematography and music complemented the movie in an excellent way, creating and sustaining a somber mood of obsession throughout the movie. 5 out of 5.
