Genre: Action
Studio: Tim Burton Productions   Release date: 1996   Rated: PG-13
Language (Country): English, French, Spanish, Soundtrack (USA)
Summary: The Earth is invaded by Martians with irresistible weapons and a cruel sense of humor.
My Rating:
My Review: Hilarious sci-fi spoof on 50's B-Films. Directed by one of my favorite directors, Tim Burton; featuring music by one of my favorite artists, Danny Elfman, and starring an outstanding cast (Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Martin Short, Jack Black, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michael J. Fox, Rod Steiger, Tom Jones, Jim Brown, Lukas Haas, Natalie Portman, Pam Grier). The story is one of cosmic invasion. When a horde of bug-eyed, big-brained, little green men from the planet Mars arrive on Earth, it's every man for himself in this Hilarious sci-fi spoof. The acting was excellent (intentionally campy, hammy, and over the top), the dialog witty, funny and wry. Full of self-deprecating satire. The cgi cartoonish yet classy. This movie doesn't pretend to be anything more than a parody of those classic sci-fi B-movies from the 50's. An homage that works because it doesn't try to be anything more than that. When the martians destroyed congress I just about fell out of my chair! Ack ack, Ack ack ack!

Director: Kenneth Branagh
Starring: Robert De Niro, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hulce, Helena Bonham Carter, Aidan Quinn
Genre: Drama
Studio: TriStar Pictures   Release date: 1994   Rated: R
Language (Country): English, Spanish, French (UK)
Summary: When Victor Frankenstein rejects the artificial man he just created, the monster escapes and later swears revenge.
My Rating:
My Review: Here is a superior version of the Frankenstein story (Based on Mary Shelley's novel). Directed by (and starring) Kenneth Branagh, this movie was very well cast; starring - Robert De Niro (The Creature) and Kenneth Branagh (Victor Frankenstein). A fatalistic story of man vs nature. Victor seeks science to repair what god hath wrought. In his quest to end morality, he dares what no one else would. He creates life! This movie does an outstanding job examining the moral implications behind such bold scientific concepts. The acting and interplay between the two characters was outstanding. The dialog challenging, thoughtful and provocative. The 'Monster' is more than a maddened hulk bent on the destruction of his 'creator'. This movie examines some heavy concepts which miss attention in previous versions of the story. I was really surprised by De Niro's performance as 'The Creature'. Outstanding, subtle and powerful. Not heavy handed in the least. The costumes and makeup were very well done. The camera work was a bit erratic. The music was a bit overly dramatic, but the lighting was perfect, and the pacing was spot on. I really enjoyed the fact that the plot threads all made sense, and this was an excellent, well reasoned screen play.

Director: Peter Weir
Starring: Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany, James D'Arcy, Edward Woodall, Chris Larkin
Genre: Action
Studio: Twentieth Century Fox   Release date: 2003   Rated: PG-13
Language (Country): English, Spanish, French (USA)
Summary: During the Napoleonic Wars, a brash British captain pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America.
My Rating:
My Review: Master and Commander - The far side of the world: This movie was on my 'buy list'. It's a terrific movie. Victorian naval warfare, and high seas adventure. Starring Russell Crowe, and directed by Peter Weir. This movie is well worth the money. Outstanding acting, powerful directing, a gripping musical score, and edge of your seat action. The scenes where canon shot rips through the rigging of the ship is astonishing. Very realistic. This is the sort of special effects that I enjoy. So realistic I thought it was real, until I watched some special feature footage. It fit the scene, it wasn't out of place, it wasn't 'over-the-top', and I had no idea that I was seeing a 'special-effect'. The level of detail in this movie was amazing. The costumes, sets and locations were all so authentic and gorgeous that the movie took me to 'the far side of the world' with the characters. Very well done. This one deserves a 5 out of 5.

Genre: Comedy, Crime, Drama, Thriller
Studio: Stratus Film Co.   Release date: 2005   Rated: R

Summary: A chance encounter between a travelling salesman and a lonely hitman triggers a strangely profound relationship which provokes each to act in ways neither would have imagined possible. Fate steps in to form a friendship between two men from irreconcilable worlds that will alter the lives of both forever.
My Rating:
My Review: Starring Pierce Brosnan as a contract killer, this movie was a refreshing change of pace. Not to far off the mark from a Bond flick, this movie was perfectly cast for Brosnan. It allowed him to explore some acting development that he'd been denied in his previously type cast roles. The story was great as well. A contract killer connects with a normal joe. Later the killer needs normal joes help in order to pull one last job. The best part of the movie was definitely Brosnan's portrayal of this amoral killer at the end of his rope. There were some great graphics, visuals, cinematic work and music in this movie. The combination of all these elements made for a thoroughly enjoyable movie. I loved it. 5 out of 5.
