A friend of mine sends me a monthly newsletter in MS Word (.doc) format. Unfortunately, Word is made by MicroSoft,
and that means it's fully proprietary. I'm not about to buy a $189.00 (Word X for Mac) application just to read a
document, so I've been trying to convert the document using various applications on my Mac. Below are some
MS Word translation examples. Translation of Word document using various software options on my Mac
equiped with Apple's OS X (10.2.4) operating system, and Apple's X11 Unix window manager.

AppleWorks |
antiword |
OpenOffice |
AbiWord |
Which one worked the best? OpenOffice.org by far. All the graphics converted, the
fonts were fairly preserved/presented, and the formatting was somewhat close.
